Many thanks Stewart Hutchison Stay in Ao Nang and day trips to Railey. Stay at Railey. Stay in both places. I recommend that you decide which place offers the most activities that interest you, and use that as a measurement to decide where to stay and how long. For example, if you want shopping and nightlife (more than bars), then you want One day/night in Ao Nang (Hint, One) Ao Nang beach also has 2 storm water overflows. Not ideal for a child to be playing. Lots of shops though.

Ao Nang has more freedom to do as you like. More resorts, more restaurants, bars, shopping. Sure Railay has a drop dead gorgeous beach, but you can do a day trip there. If you "live" there you will be commuting in the opposite direction all the time and afterdark, that gets VERY expensive.

We stayed in Ao Nang for 10 days in 2008 and it was too long for me, the tailors nearly drove me mad! West Railay has a beautiful beach and some stunning scenery, most bungalows have their own restaurants, but I don't think there are shops there to speak of. If you depart from Ao Nang to to Railay Beach or Railay Beach to Ao Nang there is a choice of using the daily ferry service which connects Ao Nang and Koh Lanta stopping off at Railay on the way. You can also arrive in Ao Nang and enjoy a private long tail boat to Railay Beach which departs when you arrive. Posted by danandhan on 20/1/2010 at 18:03. Railay is much more "beachy" than Ao Nang, and more peaceful due to absence of roads and motor vehicles.
